Duhra Village In Punjab

Updated: May 12, 2021

Duhra (Duhre) is an important village in the Jalandhar district, in the state of Punjab, India. Duhra is named after Baba Duhaar Jat Sikh, a capable athlete, who created this village in the second half of eighteen century. He migrated from the Majha region, Gurdaspur area and settled near the Alawalpur town. The Duhra village is famous for the game of football since 1950, as well as intellectual individuals. People of this village believe in democracy, secularism and socialism, and they are undivided, and live like an ideal family. The village is administrated by a Sarpanch, who is an elected representative of the village as per Panchayati Raj India. It has two Namberdars, one Chokidar and comes under the Police Station of Adampur. There is a Gurdwara and a Desh Bhagat Hall where people can perform religious and general functions. Many people of the village migrated to England, Canada, America, Australia, European and Arab countries for their livelihood.

Geography

The Duhra village is situated on Adampur to Kala Bhakra road at 31.46 Degrees North and 75.67 Degrees East. It has an average elevation of 232 metres. It is located 24

Kilo Metres towards North from the district headquarters of Jalandhar, 166 kilometres from State Capital Chandigarh and 6 kilometres from the Adampur Police Station. The total geographical area of the village is 196 hectares (500 acres). Post Office : Bias Pind , Pin code: 144 302, Web Site : jalandhar.nic.in , Telephone Code / Std Code : 0181 . Villages surrounding Duhra village are Mali Nangal, Nangal, Sarala, Badala, Dherowal, Jaganpur, Dholike, Jaflane. The nearest big towns are Adampur, Alawalpur, Bhogpur, and Sham Chorasi and cities: Jalandhar, Amritsar, Pathankot, Hoshiarpur, and Ludhiana.

Demographics

As of the 2011 Indian census, the Duhra village had a total population of 1406 (703 males, 703 females) and 315 houses. All the Jat Sikhs are descendants of Baba Duhaar. Different communities and technicians like: blacksmiths, carpenters, weavers, tailer-masters, ceramists, cobblers, music- bands, and goldsmiths lived in the village, so in this way, the village is considered self-sufficient and self-dependent. The major profession of the people is farming and other professions are related to it. Some Muslim families also live there, as they did not go to Pakistan in 1947 because they preferred to live in this village. With the passage of time, people have changed their professions as per their needs, and at present, there are no goldsmiths, cobblers and weavers. For their livelihood and a better life, people are migrating to cities and other countries. But even so, the village is doing well and has all the modern facilities like electricity, phone service, sewerage, television, bus service, and mettled roads. About 50 years ago, there were no such facilities, but we still loved to live there. We all very much miss those golden days. Our friends, class- fellows, brothers and cousins settled at many different places and a few have left this world. Now those days are simply memories to cherish.

Jat Sikhs

Off spring of Baba Duhaar are divided into different families and these families are known by different names as given below:

History

Duhra is the ancient home to most of the people calling themselves Duhra (last name). The village was created by Baba Duhaar, a warrior and athlete. Nawab of Alawalpur held a competition to see if anyone could beat his son in the game of wrestling/kabaddi. Many athletes were called to take part in the competition. Baba Duhaar won the competition by beating all athletes and the prince (son of Nawab). Nawab was impressed very much with the performance of Duhaar, and he gave him 500 acres of land and a title. Baba Duhaar settled in the North of Alawalpur and created the Duhra village. All the Jat Sikh families are offspring of Baba Duhaar. They are Sikh by faith and speak Punjabi. Though now with the increase in the number of families and the division of land, the status of the rich nobility no longer remains in the Duhra family, but they still are a noble family of Punjab, India.
