Jeona Maur was an extremely strong and religious young man who eventually became a bandit. He was a Robin Hood in the early 20th century in the region of Punjab. He was known for his devotion to the goddess Mata Naina Devi who he believed gave him strength and protection. He was revered by the people of his community for his willingness to stand up to the wealthy landlords and money lenders who exploited the poor farmers and labourers in the area. He was known for his acts of kindness and compassion, and many people believed that he had supernatural powers.
Jeona Maur was born into a poor family in the early 20th century during the British Raj in Maur village district Sangrur. Before turning to crime, he lived happily with his brother and wife. His brother was an undercover bandit, and the only person who had knowledge of this was his dearest friend Dogar, who later reported him to the police as there was a hefty reward on his head. During his brother’s arrest, the corrupted police severely beat his brother’s pregnant wife and killed her. Jeona’s brother was convicted and sent to Kala Pani Prison. Jeona Maur flew into the jungle where he met a gang of bandits and eventually became their leader and vowed to take revenge. He had murdered every person who had any involvement in the ill treatment of his family. When the police were trying to arrest him, he jumped over the hill near Mata Naina Devi and disappeared forever. His tomb is situated near Naina Devi Temple. People worship him as he became the symbol of justice.
